The Leaf That Crossed an Ocean: How Centella Asiatica Moved from Colonial Herbarium to Modern Skincare

In 1838, a single botanical specimen left Madagascar aboard the HMS Tweed, bound for the herbarium of Sir William Jackson Hooker in Glasgow. Among the 450 Madagascan plants listed in a letter preserved at the Kew archives was Centella asiatica—a modest creeper with fan-shaped leaves, then little known beyond coastal villages where it was gathered for poultices and teas. By the time Professor Albert Rakoto Ratsimamanga extracted its active principle, asiaticoside, in 1949 and turned it into the wound-healing drug Madecassol, the plant had traveled the entire arc of colonial botany: from Malagasy soil to British glassine, from handwritten ledgers to industrial chromatography, and finally into the vials and jars of contemporary skincare.
Madagascar’s humid lowlands and lateritic soils proved uniquely suited to Centella. The species thrives in disturbed edges—fallow rice paddies, riverbanks, the verges of missionary stations—where its stolons root easily and its leaves accumulate high concentrations of pentacyclic triterpenoids. Field studies from the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement mapped the plant’s polyploid complexity across the island, showing how successive founder events and vegetative propagation shaped distinct chemotypes that modern extractors now standardize for consistency.
