The Moissanite Shift: How a Lab-Created Stone Reshaped India’s Jewellery Craft

Surat’s cutting wheels, once reserved for diamonds alone, now turn on moissanite. In India’s diamond capital, the stone’s rise has rewritten provenance and craft, testing the boundaries of tradition without leaving them behind.

Moissanite—first synthesised in the 1990s from silicon carbide—differs from diamond in both chemistry and character. Its higher refractive index creates a vivid fire that moves differently under light, a quality that has made it both a laboratory curiosity and a consumer choice. As early as 1997, gemmologists at the Gemological Institute of America documented its properties in Synthetic Moissanite: A New Diamond Substitute, noting its durability and optical behaviour distinct from diamond’s white brilliance.

Yet it is not its sparkle alone that reshapes jewellery practices. The stone’s arrival in India’s trade routes has forced a reckoning with disclosure. Reports from Surat indicate that moissanite is being “passed off as LGDs in jewellery,” a practice that blurs the line between lab-grown alternatives and risks consumer trust. The city, already a global hub for lab-grown diamond production, now faces a new scrutiny: how to mark the difference between a lab-created diamond and a lab-grown stone that is not a diamond at all.

This distinction matters in craft. Moissanite’s hardness—9.25 on the Mohs scale—makes it resilient for daily wear, yet its cutting angles and facet patterns differ from those used for diamond. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has responded by extending its grading framework to moissanite, issuing certificates that trace the stone’s origin and quality. Through partnerships with manufacturers like Charles & Colvard, IGI now provides grading reports that mirror the 4Cs used for diamonds—cut, clarity, carat, and color—while acknowledging moissanite’s unique optical signature.

In India’s jewellery vaults, moissanite has moved beyond imitation. Yet in India, where jewellery is both adornment and heirloom, the stone’s emergence has already changed how craftsmanship is documented and how provenance is protected.
